Child & Adolescent Therapy
At Adapted Mind, we understand that children and adolescents experience and express emotional difficulties in ways that are often very different from adults. Their behaviours are deeply interconnected with their relationships—with themselves, their families, peers, and the wider environment in which they live. Our approach to therapy is grounded in helping young people and their families make meaningful, lasting changes by uncovering and addressing the underlying causes of emotional and behavioural challenges.
The therapeutic relationship is central to this process. For younger children, play is often their most natural form of communication. Through play-based therapy, we gain valuable insight into a child’s emotional world, helping them to explore and express feelings that may be difficult to articulate in words. This safe and supportive environment allows for the development of trust and encourages children to build emotional awareness, resilience, and healthier coping strategies.
We also incorporate evidence-based approaches such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Schema Therapy, tailored specifically for younger clients. With CBT, children and adolescents learn to identify unhelpful thought patterns, understand how these influence their feelings and behaviours, and practice new, more adaptive ways of thinking and responding. CBT techniques are especially effective for issues such as anxiety, low mood, phobias, and self-esteem challenges.
Schema Therapy for children and adolescents focuses on helping them understand the early emotional needs that may not have been fully met and how this can lead to recurring emotional or behavioural difficulties. Using age-appropriate and engaging techniques—such as storytelling, visual aids, and creative activities—we help children and teens identify "schemas" (deeply held patterns or beliefs) that might be driving their behaviour. Therapy then works to build healthier ways of thinking, feeling, and connecting with others, while also involving caregivers in the healing process when appropriate.
Given the developmental needs of children and the emotional complexity involved, therapy is often a longer-term process. It allows time for trust to grow and for deep emotional exploration to unfold at a pace that feels safe and manageable. For adolescents, therapy may combine verbal insight work with experiential and skills-based strategies, depending on the young person's individual needs and readiness.Throughout the process, we work collaboratively with families to ensure the support offered in therapy continues beyond the therapy room. Our goal is to help young people feel seen, understood, and empowered to navigate their world with greater confidence and emotional strength.
