Educational Assessment
(Also referred to as Psychoeducational or Learning Assessments)
At Adapted Mind, we provide comprehensive educational and academic assessments for children, adolescents, and adults. These assessments are valuable when there are concerns about learning, attention, intellectual development, or school/work performance. Whether you're seeking answers around a specific learning difficulty, giftedness, or intellectual disability, our assessments offer clear insights and tailored recommendations to support growth and learning across the lifespan.
What does an Assessment involve?
All assessments are conducted by a registered clinical psychologist and follow a structured, evidence-based process:
1. Initial Information Gathering
We begin with a comprehensive intake process, including interviews with parents (or the adult client), as well as input from teachers, support workers, or employers if appropriate. Questionnaires are completed in advance to help us understand developmental, emotional, and educational history.
2. Assessment Sessions
- Session 1: Cognitive testing (IQ assessment) – approximately 2 hours
- Session 2: Academic achievement testing – approximately 2 hours
- Additional assessments (e.g. phonological processing, executive functioning) may be included depending on the referral question
3. Comprehensive Report
- You will receive a detailed written report that includes:
- Cognitive and academic results
- Diagnoses (if applicable)
- Learning profile (strengths and challenges)
- Recommendations for school, work, or daily living supports
4. Feedback Session
A 1-hour feedback session is scheduled to discuss the findings and ensure clarity around the next steps. This is an essential part of the process to help families, educators, or adult clients apply the recommendations effectively.
Assessing Learning Difficulties & Specific Learning Disorders (SLDs)
Educational assessments are commonly used to identify Specific Learning Disorders, including challenges in reading (dyslexia), writing, and mathematics (dyscalculia). These disorders often become more apparent over time, particularly when academic demands increase.
- Our assessments help to:
- Identify learning profiles and areas of need
- Distinguish between a learning disorder and other issues such as attention difficulties or emotional distress
- Support applications for exam accommodations or specialised intervention programs
- Guide classroom modifications and evidence-based support strategies
Early identification of learning difficulties can significantly improve educational outcomes, support self-esteem, and reduce frustration related to academic tasks.
Assessing Giftedness & High Cognitive Potential
- Support applications for enrichment or acceleration programs
- Guide decisions around school placement or flexible grouping
- Understand complex profiles, including—those who are gifted and also have a learning or attention difficulty
- A giftedness assessment can help:
Giftedness refers to individuals with exceptional cognitive abilities, often performing significantly above their peers in one or more domains. While not a formal diagnosis, identifying giftedness can help ensure appropriate educational planning and emotional support.
Common traits of gifted individuals include:
- Intellectual curiosity and rapid learning
- Creative problem-solving and abstract thinking
- Emotional sensitivity or intensity
- Persistence and intrinsic motivation
- Advanced language or reasoning skills
Understanding a gifted child or adult’s cognitive profile can assist educators, parents, and individuals in fostering both intellectual and emotional development.
Intellectual Disability
An Intellectual Disability Assessment is often requested to determine whether an individual meets the criteria for ID. These assessments may be needed for:
- NDIS applications
- School-based funding or curriculum adaptation
- Understanding lifelong support needs and functional abilities
Individuals with intellectual disability typically show challenges across multiple academic areas and in daily adaptive functioning. This is distinct from specific learning disorders, which affect more isolated skills.
Our assessment process provides clarity on:
Our assessment process provides clarity on:
- The presence and severity of intellectual disability
- Recommendations for daily living, learning support, and service access
- Documentation required for schools, allied health teams, or disability service providers
We work sensitively with families and adults to ensure that assessment outcomes are used to enhance understanding, reduce stigma, and connect individuals with the support they need to thrive.
At Adapted Mind, our goal is to provide thoughtful, thorough assessments that lead to meaningful support for each client—whether they are navigating school, work, or everyday life.
